Faust was born in Esslingen, near Stuttgart, in 1972. She accompanied her father to his violin lessons when she was five, and while the father's talents were ordinary, teachers noticed that the daughter quickly mastered whatever challenges she was given. A family string quartet (her brother Boris Faust is a noted violist) as well as lessons with Denes Zsigmondy and Christoph Poppen honed her skills.

After winning first prize at the International Leopold Mozart Competition in Augsburg in 1987, Faust moved to Paris for nine years to gain experience in new contexts rather than enrolling in a conservatory. She made her U.S. debut in 1995 with the Utah Symphony and appeared with many of Germany's top orchestras including the Hamburg Philharmonic under the baton of Yehudi Menuhin.

In 1997 Faust released her first album, a set of Bartók violin sonatas recorded with pianist Ewa Kupiec; the album earned a Gramophone magazine award. Most of her albums have been released on the Harmonia Mundi label. In the early 2000s Faust began performing and recording violin sonata repertory with Russian pianist Alexander Melnikov, including their historically informed recording of Mozart violin sonatas.  Faust has been on the faculty of Berlin's University of the Arts since 2004.

Born in Hamburg in 1966 and now living in Berlin with his family, there are three things that make this musician unique, aside from his astounding skill on the violin. He interprets the musical manuscript in a literal fashion, perceives music as a language, and views great works as narratives which reflect existential experiences. As obvious as it may sound, he brings an unusual approach in his daily concert routine.

Secondly, Christian Tetzlaff “speaks” through his violin. Like human speech, his playing comprises a wide range of expressive means and is not aimed solely at achieving harmoniousness or virtuosic brilliance.

Above all, however, he interprets the masterpieces of musical history as stories about first-hand experiences.

SEPTEMBER Studio News

Friday, September 1, 2017 by Cortney Baker | Uncategorized

September tuition

is due at your first lesson of the month.  The envelope for tuition is hanging on the cabinet when you enter the studio.  Consult your monthly invoice for the exact amount remaining for summer lessons.

September schedule

No lessons on Labor Day, September 4.
Consult your registration form or log in to your MyMusicStaff portal account to see your specific lesson dates and times.

2017-2018 Lesson Registration

Thank you to everyone for signing up for lessons in a timely fashion!  I never know what to expect each August in regards to scheduling all the requests, however each year it ends up being much easier than I anticipate.  A lot of that is due to the details you all submit online.  Thank you!  You should have received an email with a yearly invoice, its is much busier than I like, but it hopefully gives you most of the information that you are used to seeing at the start of the year.  This is just an informational email.  You will receive an invoice the first of every month (like this past summer) that will explain the monthly specifics better.

Parent Education

This weekend I am going to begin populating the Library & Downloads page in your MMS portal with articles and handouts for parents.  Find a title that interests you and read it!  I will also be highlighting one of those articles here each month, beginning in October.

November workshop

Saturday, November 4: Chapel Hill Workshop with Dr. Terry Durbin.  Join us for the day (9a-6p) for group, fiddle, improv, movement and MMG classes, parent talks and more!  Everyone is highly encouraged to attend this one-day event.  It is such a motivational boost for every student that attends.  Let me know if you have any questions, or talk with a family who has attended.

Masterclasses are available on Friday and Sunday.  A masterclass is like a lesson, only shorter (~20min) and with a "master" teacher who is not your child's "every-week" teacher. The advantage of taking a masterclass is for getting a "second" opinion or other vantage point from which to view your child's musical path.  Usually a masterclass teacher will be found saying the something very similar to what the home teacher or parent has been saying, but since it is in a new environment, or simply said a different way, it hits home and makes a difference!  I am a huge advocate of masterclass lessons and would love to have this experience with any of you!

The online registration is live!  Here is the email from the organizing team:

Dear Suzuki Friends,

Registration is open for this year's Chapel Hill Durham Suzuki workshop.  This workshop will serve Suzuki students at the pre-twinkle level through book 10+. We hope you can attend!

Isaac Stern (1920 - 2001)

Stern was more than just a violinist, he was also a strong force behind many great and famous violinists including Itzhak Perlman. Highly respected in the violin community as a statesman as well as a premier violinists of the 20th century, he was both a violin teacher and a player.

When he was 6, Stern started learning to play the piano but he would soon turn his interest to the violin which led him to study at the San Francisco Conservatory and then later under Naoum Blinder.

Since making his debut at the age of 15 with the San Francisco Symphony, he would go on to collaborate with the great Russian pianist Alexander Zakin before going on to discover great violinists like Pinchas Zukerman.

Before his death in 2001 at the age of 81, Isaac Stern had already had many recordings and awards to his name.
